The Tragic Death of Audrey Hepburn
"I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles." - Audrey Hepburn |
In her later years, Audrey Hepburn focused more on her work for children, rather than acting. She became a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF in the late 1980s. Traveling the world, Hepburn tried to raise awareness about children in need. Making more than fifty trips, Hepburn visited UNICEF projects in Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. She won a special Academy Award for her humanitarian work in 1993, but she did not live long enough to receive it. In late 1992, Audrey began to feel pains in her stomach, which turned out to be a rare form of cancer that originated in the appendix. Audrey had surgery in a Los Angeles hospital, but the cancer continued to spread, and she decided to refuse chemotherapy. Audrey died of colorectal cancer on January 20th, 1993, in Tolochenaz, Vaud, Switzerland at the age of 63, and was interred there. While Audrey will be missed, all of her hard work to help children around the world continued even after her death. Her sons, Sean Ferrer and Luca Dotti, along with her partner Robert Wolders, established the Audrey Hepburn Memorial Fund to continue Hepburn's humanitarian work. It is now known as the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund. |
