Born on May 4, 1929, in Brussels, Belgium, Audrey Hepburn was born to a Dutch mother, Ella van Heemstra, and British father, Joseph Hepburn-Ruston. She had two older step-brothers because of Ella's previous marriage. Their names are Alexander and Ian, who are eight and four years Audrey's senior. Audrey had a very difficult childhood. At at age 5 she was sent to boarding school in England, away from her family at a very young age. When she was six, her father walked out on the family. Audrey's parents got divorced shortly after. As a teenager, she lived in occupied Holland during the war. Despite all this, Audrey was a talented performer since the very beginning. During much of World War II, she studied at the Arnhem Conservatory in The Netherlands, which is a school known for their talent in the arts. After the Nazis invaded the country, Hepburn and her mother struggled to survive. She reportedly helped the resistance movement by delivering messages, according to an article in The New York Times. |
